13 Healthy Snacks for a Plane or Car Ride

Wondering what a registered dietitian brings to eat while traveling to stay healthy? I’m sharing my favorite 13 healthy snacks for a plane or car ride!

I’ve traveled somewhere every month this year and don’t see that slowing down anytime soon. I love traveling but it becomes no fun when I don’t feel my best or when I come home sick.

You can’t control how long the line for security will be, but you can control what you bring with a little planning a head.

What’s in a Dietitian’s Travel Bag

  • Empty water bottle. Most every airport has a water refill stations attached to each water fountain…use them! Save yourself five dollars for a water bottle and BYO bottle for water.
  • Portable charger. You can’t rely on the chargers near the seats at the terminals…you just can’t! And because literally my worst nightmare is my phone dying as I’m trying to get an Uber home!
  • Neosporin. I started putting neosporin up my nostrils while flying late last year, and haven’t been sick after a flight since. Yes, it’s weird when the people I’m sitting next to on the plane see me stick it up my nose but I truly do not care at all if it prevents me from catching the nasties that are in the air on planes. I’m not opposed to a face mask either!

Maggie’s Recommended Travel Essentials

Comfy shoes–the ones pictured here with the bow tie are easy to slip on and off (I wear the little no show socks with them)

Stasher bags (pictured in light green below) — save the environment and travel in style with these bags that can fit all your makeup, toiletries and snacks.

Belt bag— close to your body, and big enough to fit things like a passport, phone, charger and all of those healthy travel snacks. I love that it’s neutral and goes with any travel outfit!

13 Healthy Snacks for a Plane or Car Ride

Airports are coming a long way in terms of healthy snacks, but depending on where you’re flying to your options might be very limited to none.

A 30 minute delay can turn into a 3 hour delay all too quickly, and I’m convinced that airports and planes make everyone instantly hangry-er! Be prepared with some of these healthy snacks for a plane or car ride, like crackers, nuts and bars. I always bring a couple different things because I don’t know what I’ll be in the mood for during different legs of travel.

The Cibo Express in Terminal 2 at O’Hare Airport has an amazing selection of healthy snacks (many of the ones I’ve listed below), it’s definitely the place to stock up if you didn’t bring your own.

  • RXBAR single serving nut butter packets (pair with banana, apple or granola)
  • Purely Elizabeth individual oatmeal cups or Quaker plain oatmeal pouches (pair with banana or apple)
  • Bars (think RXBARS, KIND bars, Health Warrior pumpkin seeds bars, Perfect bars, Bobos bar, and 88 acres bars.
  • CHOMPS meat sticks (gluten free, dairy free, AIP friendly, whole30 approved and low carb)
  • Made in Nature veggie pops or figgy pops
  • nuts (think pistachios, skinny dipped almonds (use code MAGGIE15 for 15% off of your order!), or walnuts)
  • portable fruit and veggies like banana, apple, oranges, grapes, carrots, celery or pepper slices
  • dried fruit (think dried mango, apple rings, prunes, unsweetened banana chips)
  • air popped popcorn (pair with nuts and a few squares of dark chocolate)
  • hard-boiled eggs (pair with a piece of fruit or string cheese)
  • Simple Mills almond flour crackers (pair with string cheese)
  • GG high fiber crackers (because hello travel constipation is a real thing.)
  • Paleocrunch granola
  • low sugar yogurt** (pair with fruit, granola, nuts, or dried fruit)

**find this in the airport after you’ve gone through security!
