Orange Spiced Chocolate Chip Cookies

Orange spiced chocolate chip cookies are a bright take on a chocolate chip cookie infused with orange zest and chocolate chip cookies! Made gluten and dairy free with almond flour, these cookies make for a healthier and delicious treat.

It’s officially citrus season and I couldn’t be more excited to infuse the bright flavors of orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit into everything I’m eating right now. Perfect for adding more color to your palette especially this time of year when the days are grey (like here in Chicago!).

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I get the most inspiration for what to cook and bake based on what’s in season (hello pumpkin!). Not only does eating seasonally promote good diversity in your diet, but it’s also good for the planet too. I also find that anytime I’m in a food rut feeling like I’m eating the same things over and over again, picking up a fruit or vegetable helps to challenge me to try a new type of meal or create a new, fresh snack — which is exactly what happened in the case of these cookies!

I figured that the orange zest would complement the subtle nutty flavor of these almond flour cookies but I didn’t know just how good it would be! Each bite is chewy, chocolatey and a little bit brighter thanks to hints of orange zest throughout the batter.

You can definitely adjust the amount of orange in this chocolate chip cookie recipe to suit your liking. I originally tested this recipe with the zest from one whole orange and thought that might be too much but once the cookies cooled and the flavors settled a bit more, that amount was perfect!

making these cookies vegan

Making these orange chocolate chip cookies vegan is easy. Simply substitute a regular egg for a flax egg. To make a flax egg, you will need 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed plus 3 tablespoons of warm water. Combine the water and the ground flax seed and let it sit for a few minutes until it gets thick.

Once it’s thickened up a bit add it to the batter and continue following the recipe. That’s it!

Description

Orange spiced chocolate chip cookies are a bright take on a chocolate chip cookie infused with orange zest and chocolate chip cookies! Made gluten and dairy free with almond flour, these cookies make for a healthier and delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups blanched almond flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 cup dairy-free or regular semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • zest of 1 orange
  • flaky sea salt to sprinkle on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat.
  2. In a mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer add the sugar and coconut oil and beat on low until combined. Add in the egg and vanilla and mix until smooth.
  3. Add the almond flour, baking soda, and salt, mix on low until incorporated.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chip cookies and zest of the orange. Use a cookie scoop to portion out the batter. Use your palm to slightly flatten down the cookies. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt, and a little extra orange zest on top and bake for 12 minutes until the edges are a little bit golden brown.

Notes

Store the cookies in an airtight container (I like storing cookies in my stasher bag) for 3-4 days.
