Spring is citrus season and this week on Instagram I’m hosting a citrus themed week! I’m using citrus in all different fun and unique ways all week long to show you just how many different things you can do with different types of citrus! From smoothies to tacos and everything in between, citrus is super versatile, flavorful and fun to cook and bake with!

Cara cara orange nutrition

Cara cara oranges are known as The Power Orange® because they contain 100% of your daily intake of vitamin C and offer fiber, folate, potassium and vitamin A in every bite. They may look like a regular orange from the outside, but open one up and you will see the seedless inside is a beautiful pink color thanks to the antioxidant lycopene.

As we know, vitamin C is super important for our immune systems. Including foods high in vitamin C like Cara cara oranges, and other citrus fruits is a great way to make sure you’re getting enough in your diet on a daily basis.

Available now through May, look for Cara cara oranges the next time you’re at the store to snack on or use in this smoothie recipe!

Benefits of a Balanced Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to add more nutrition to your diet in a quick and convenient way. No matter the flavor combination, there’s a few things I think every smoothie should have to be balanced. In order to be balanced and keep you full for more than an hour your smoothies should contain protein, healthy fat and fiber.

All of these components help with satiety which means they help to keep us fuller for longer and more satisfied from the smoothie.

In this orange oat milk smoothie, the protein powder/collagen is giving you protein, the fiber is coming from the orange and flax seed and the healthy fat is also coming from the flax seed or almond butter if you choose to add that in. I personally like using a plant-based protein powder and unflavored collagen (use code pumpkin10 for 10% off your first order!) in all my smoothies.

simple orange ginger smoothie ingredients

Orange Ginger POWER Smoothie Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond or oat milkI love how creamy and thick oat milk makes smoothies but you can definitely use whatever milk you prefer.
  • 2 Sunkist® Cara Cara orangesI love how cara cara oranges look like a regular orange on the outside but are pink in the inside! Not to mention they contain all of the vitamin C you need in a day.
  • 2 tsp. freshly grated gingerthis gives the smoothie a nice little zing plus extra immunity and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • 1 tbsp. ground flax seed or unsweetened almond butterI’ve made this smoothie with one or the other and both. Both ground flax seed and almond butter give this smoothie more healthy fat for staying power.
  • 1 frozen banana – frozen bananas are perfect for smoothies because they make them even creamier!
  • 1 scoop protein powder or collagen (optional)
  • Handful of ice
